Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) and barcode is a modern and fast growing technology with many advantages including efficiency, cost control, least manual handling, accuracy and faster data and information transfer.
Discovered in 1920s, initially RFID’s and barcode applications were limited to military and espionage activities, but because of its limitless potential now it has been widely applied to almost all industrial sectors.
Tags and transponders are the heart and brain of this technology, and to simply explain it, RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification Technology and it uses low power radio signals to communicate with objects tagged with RFID transponders/tags, and automatically transfers information stores within tags.
This data/information can be anything from item code, to manufacturing date or from date of birth to date of purchase or installation, and this unique capacity of RFID to transfer data across the computer makes it’s a really powerful application in the areas of inventory management, stock take, supply chain management, goods or livestock movement tracking, distribution network management etc.
For example, stock take of received goods involves lots of manual handling, more chances of human error, time consumption, and chances of occupational risk involved in manual handling, but RFID makes this task very simple and accurate with less staff required with huge savings on overtimes and almost zero error.
RFID has been successfully applied to many industrial sectors with dramatic results in terms of productivity and costing.
